Will traditional healing interfere with my Western medical regime? Traditional healing complements Western medicine, and many Western physicians refer their patients to Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners and acupuncturists for the relief we can offer. My aim is to work with your Western medical regime and physician in order to treat the root of your health concerns and nurture your body’s overall health and balance.
Any herbal treatments we may recommend will be gentle, all-natural, and plant-based. We can provide you with information about the herbs if you’d like to check with your physician or pharmacist.
What is the difference between a TCM treatment and acupuncture done by other healthcare professionals? Traditional healing takes a holistic approach to your health concerns. We’ll look at your entire health panorama and treat the root of the problem. We won’t treat the problem ‘locally’, we will treat it ‘systemically’. This results in longer lasting effects. There are more and more evidence-based studies emerging every day to support the success that TCM and acupuncture have in treating many health issues. We aim to bring your body back to its natural balance and rhythm.
Are your services confidential? Absolutely. I am under the same obligations to ensure confidentiality as any other licensed health practitioner in the province of Ontario, and I take these obligations very seriously.
Acupuncture covered by OHIP? Or by my insurance? No. It is not covered by OHIP but covered by many insurance plans. As of April 2013, acupuncture and TCM are regulated in the province of Ontario. Lesley is a registered acupuncture practitioner under this new provincial regulation.
What is your facility like? My clinic is based out of Deep River Family Chiropractic integrated health centre in downtown Deep River, located at 4 Glendale Ave. My treatment rooms are in a designated section of the clinic and bring immediate tranquility to your mind and body. Also on site are a certified chiropractor and a registered massage therapist.
How do I book an appointment with you? Please call our office during business hours (Monday to Friday) to book an appointment with our receptionist. Please be advised that, due to high demand, there is usually a waiting period of one to two weeks for non-urgent appointments. The telephone number is (613) 584-9971.
I’ve booked my first appointment. What should I expect? Your first appointment with me will consist of 90-minute health consultation that includes an acupuncture treatment. During the consultation I will perform an intake interview to get an in-depth picture of your overall health. I’ll ask you questions about your sleep quality, your daily routines, your regularity, and more. The interview will aim to diagnose the root of your health concern so that I can treat its source. I will also assess your tongue and pulses. I will then give you an acupuncture treatment based on this diagnosis and assessment. You will leave the initial consultation with a holistic treatment plan in hand that includes food and lifestyle recommendations.
Please be sure to bring a list of all your current medications and supplements to your first appointment. The initial consultation costs $90.00.
What should I wear to my appointment? Wear loose-fitting slacks that can be rolled above the knee and a loose-fitting shirt or blouse.
What payment methods do you accept? I accept personal cheques and cash.
How long does a treatment take? The standard treatment length is between 30 and 60 minutes and depends on your particular health concern.
How many treatments will I need before I feel better? I'm often asked this question, and the answer is, the number of treatments you’ll need depends entirely on your condition. A good rule of thumb is that the longer you’ve suffered from the condition, the longer it may take to get to the root of the problem. Still, we should be able to alleviate at least some of the symptoms within the first couple of visits.
How are your needles sterilized? All of the needles are individually wrapped, single-use, high-grade acupuncture needles. All needles are discarded in a bio-hazardous waste container immediately after use.
I don’t like needles. Will acupuncture hurt? Acupuncture is not an uncomfortable experience. Acupuncture needles are incredibly thin—not much wider than the diameter of a human hair. Receiving acupuncture feels like getting a mosquito bite, but without the irritating itch. It’s just a little zing, and the long-lasting pain relief by far outweighs the split-second discomfort you may feel.
Are there other options if I fear needles? For those who have a great fear of needles, Oriental Medicine has many alternatives such as Acupressure, Cupping Therapy, Acutonics, Moxibustion, Nutritional Counseling, Herbal Therapies and Guasha. Ask us about them!
Do you work with children? Absolutely! I’ve had great success treating children’s anxiety, diabetes, immune system weakness, digestive disorders, and more. The calming and homey atmosphere of the treatment space puts young clients at ease.
Can you help me quit smoking? If you’re ready to quit, then traditional healing can help you do it successfully. By using auricular therapy (ear acupuncture), we can help control cravings, calm the anxiety related to quitting smoking, and help you conquer the addiction.
Can you help me lose weight? Using a holistic approach, TCM can help you reach your body’s healthy weight. Traditional healing’s approach to weight loss uses acupuncture, nutritional and lifestyle counselling, and traditional herbal remedies to get to the root of your weight issues and help you reach your goals.
What do fertility treatments entail? TCM fertility treatments complement other medical treatment regimes you may be following. In most cases, TCM accesses the reproductive organs via connected meridians in the hands/feet, legs, and lower abdomen to open channels and ensure that the body is in balance. I’ll also assess the overall health of both partners by looking at diet and lifestyle and give recommendations accordingly.
My health problems aren’t necessarily physical. Do you deal with mental health issues? Yes. Traditional healing believes that the mind and body are connected, and the health of one is strongly influenced by the condition of the other. Depression, acute anxiety, and PTSD are just a few of the mental health issues that TCM treatments can address.
Even if you haven’t been diagnosed with a mental illness, Traditional Chinese Medicine has a proven track record of alleviating insomnia, anxiety, addictions, and more.
